With a view to achieving improved efficiencies through greater flexibility, Toll Refrigerated recently purchased 15 STEELBRO low profile, lightweight skeletal trailers along with a number of new Freightliner Columbia prime movers.   The Trailers are expected to assist in improving the efficiency of Toll’s pickup and delivery fleet.

According to Tim Pulman, national equipment manager at Toll Refrigerated, “The STEELBRO trailers have given Toll greater flexibility at an operational level which has given the company capacity to carry heavier containers.”

As a result, the company plans to secure new business in the heavier freight markets particularly in the produce and fast moving consumer goods markets.

“As an organisation, we are always seeking a competitive advantage,” Pulman continued.  “We sought a partner in the marketplace to work with us on an individual design of trailer to accommodate the carriage of our unique 46’6” refrigerated containers.  Since the arrival of the STEELBRO trailers we have been able to transport heavier loads whilst fully complying with regulations and legislative guidelines.

“Whilst we chose the STEELBRO trailers primarily because of their light tare weight and the opportunities they would give us with new markets, we also took into consideration STEELBRO’s depth of experience and sound manufacturing practices,” Tim added. “To date the new trailers have demonstrated outstanding robustness while enabling us to increase efficiency through the carriage of heavier containers.”

Subject to final specifications, tare weights for STEELBRO tri axle skeletal trailers start at less than four tonnes.  The trailers come standard with a low profile gooseneck which allows a high skid plate height whilst keeping overall height under 4.3 metres when carrying high cube containers.  Various twist lock locations on the trailers allows for flexible load positioning to optimise weight distribution and cater for different sized shipping containers.
